“The school was about a mile from our house. Ms. Sue Mammie Few was the principal and the teacher of the 4th through 7th grades, and I had her as my teacher for four years and then I went to Rutledge. During the time that I was at Rutledge, the Rosenwalds, people from New York that had lots of money, wanted to see what was wrong with education in rural Georgia and they sent two people to Fairplay to live in the community and to teach in the schools. One of ‘em lived with my parents and the other lady lived with my Uncle, right there at the school.”
