Malcom's Crossroads

Malcom’s Crossroads, which has also been identified as Sowhatchet, is a deeply rooted agricultural community. It was created and maintained by the citizens that long ago farmed this land and continue to do so today. The heart of Malcom’s Crossroads existed at the intersection of what is currently known as Fairplay Road and Sandy Creek Road. According to the 1939 Georgia DOT Map, the Malcom’s Crossroads community had a store, a small business, three warehouses, a watertank, various residential dwellings, a church, and a cemetery.

Memories of Malcom's Crossroads

“I was born in a little place about 3 miles outside of Bostwick called Sowhatchet and many people have heard of that name but they didn’t know why it was called Sowhatchet. The people that lived there before my parents died had some neighbors and their sow kept getting out, going in the garden, and they finally killed the sow with a hatchet. A hatchet is something like a little chop axe and that’s why it got the name Sowhachet.”
